According to a 2003 study in the New England Journal of Medicine, driving after the game on Super Bowl Sunday can be a pretty dangerous venture. After studying driver fatalities on 27 consecutive Super Bowl Sundays, the researchers observed a 41% relative increase in the average number of fatalities after the game. The increase also applied to nonfatal injuries – generally larger in losing states (sorry Colorado)!
We imagine that the best time to drive this Sunday will be between 3:30pm and 6:30pm. You’ll be hard pressed to find any Washington residents out and about. Most will be glued to FOX TV. With that said, please be safe when driving this Sunday after the game. The increase in fatalities is due to alcohol, inattention, and fatigue. The Northwest has been all about the 12th man this football season, especially the last two weeks. We’ll be tired by the time it’s all over.
Our best advice is to stay off the roads after the game. It’s a big day in the U.S. and this year a really big day for greater Tacoma/Seattle area residents. The study found that the fatalities reported on Super Bowl Sunday even exceed fatalities reported on New Year’s Eve. One could argue that the Super Bowl is the biggest holiday in the U.S.
