If you’ve been taking note of your car’s exterior lately, you’re probably thinking about when we’ll have a nice enough stretch to clean it up. Winter is the harshest time of the year on a car’s body. Road salt, gravel, sand, and road debris can make your car and truck body look worn out and ragged. Most people are waiting for a nice day to clean the car, which also means that for quite a few months it hasn’t been shown any love. What better time then spring for a good clean? It’s also a good time to fix minor body damage that has resulted from the harsh winter.
Here’s what you should do:
- Clean and vacuum the inside first
- Use soap specifically made for cars
- Do not wash in direct sunlight
- Sponge down the car gently, rinsing the sponge often
- Clean fenders and bumper last
- Blast the undercarriage and wheel wells to remove as much salt as possible
- Dry the car gently with chamois or a cloth made of natural fibers
- Don’t forget to clean the windows and mirrors
When completed with your cleaning, look for chips, abrasions, and rust. If the damage is small enough you can repair it yourself with a touch-up kit available at your dealership. For larger problems visit your body shop for repairs.
